A1. 7320 seconds                                                                                                                                                 Explanation:                                                                                                                                     1st game seconds = 3 hrs x (60 mins/hr x 60 seconds/minute) + (57 mins/hr x 60 seconds/minute) + 1 second = 14,221 seconds                                                                                                                                        2nd game seconds = 5 hrs x (60 mins/hr x 60 seconds/minute + (59 mins/hr x 60 seconds/minute) + 1 seconds =  21,541 seconds                                                                                                                                            21,541 – 14,221 = 7320 seconds

A2: 36 baseball cards                                                                                                                           Explanation:                                                                                                                                               5 baseball cards/pack x 7 packs = 35 cards – 5 cards + 6 cards = 36 baseball cards

A3:  10 hits in the 2nd inning, 20 hits in the 3rd inning

Explanation:

12 (1st inning) + x (2nd inning) + 2x (3rd inning) = 42

3x = 30, x = 10

A4: 21 total runs                                                                                                                                     Explanation:                                                                                                                                            3 + 4 +1 + 13 = 21 total runs

A5: 17 runs

Explanation:                                                                                                                                             Diamondbacks runs = 12 + 4 = 16

Rockies runs + X = 7 + Diamondbacks runs

6 + X = 7 + 16,   6 + X = 23

X= 17 which is how many more runs the Rockies need to win by 7 runs.

A6: 13 runs                                                                                                                      Explanation:                                                                                                                                            7 + 6 = 13 runs

A7: 5 runs per game                                                                                                                      Explanation:                                                                                                                                      15 runs / 3 games = 5 runs/game

A8: 112 people can be seated at the field                                                                                       Explanation:                                                                                                                                      8 rows x 14 seats/row = 112 seats

A9: 25,326 home runs hit                                                                                                                    Explanation:                                                                                                                                      67 x 378 = 25,326

There are 16 people selling peanuts throughout the Rockies game and 20 others selling cotton candy. In the bags they carry, each holds 25 items, with each at a cost of $5.39. On the third inning, everyone sold out! How much money did they make all together? How much money did each person make individually?
Those are good questions – just two of the hundreds created by Front Range 4th and 5th grade students as part of this year’s IBM/KOA Baseball Math Challenge.

Students from 26 classrooms across the Front Range, who are part of the IBM MentorPlace program, developed math problems as part of a volunteer project where IBM volunteers encourage student interest in math and science.  All participating classrooms earned a visit this spring from KOA baseball announcers Jack Corrigan and Jerry Schemmel.  Two classrooms will receive 100 tickets each for a Rockies game before school lets out for the summer.

If you’d like more information about the IBM MentorPlace program, contact Bill Prater, jprater@us.ibm.com

Each week KOA will post the Rockies baseball math problems created by one or more classrooms.

A7.  6 x $9 = $54 spent

A8.  50 x 2 = 100 hats

A9.  10 + 7 = 17 runs total

A10.  $10 x 1,000 = $10,000 spent

A11.  460+485+607+500+790+800 = 3,642 total feet

A12.  2110 – 40 = 2,070 left

A13.  200 x $2.50 = $500 spent

A14.  300 – 50 = 250 tickets left

A15.  $11 + $23 = $34 spent

A16.  2,180 – 1,377 = 803 left

A17.  Rockies 19 + 12 = 31

          Red Sox 19 – 9 = 10

31 – 10 = 21 more Red Sox needed to make the teams even

Our parents will pitch in another $50.

How much will each of my friends have to take out of their piggy banks to cover the remaining cost of the hoodie, not including taxes, shipping & handling fees.

Hoodies total purchase price = $239.94 (6 @$39.95 each)

$239.94 less my $100 contribution  = $139.94
